Regular maintenance of artificial turf

The regular, ‘daily’ maintenance comprises a few simple measures that require little effort and ensure a maximum result.

goal areas are used more intensively

1. Brushing and adding

Some places on the artificial turf pitch are used more intensively than others. For example, in football, these are the goal area and the 11 metre line. Whereas in hockey, the penalty spot and stroke mark are used more. As a result, the infill material may shift position. The infill can be brushed back into place using a hard nylon brush. In the long term you can also add infill yourself in these places. This material can be supplied by your installer.

fallen leaves must be removed regularly from the synthetic pitch

2. Remove dirt

In the autumn, leaves and needles dropping from trees and bushes may end up on the synthetic pitch. If this material is not removed then the artificial pitch may gradually "silt up" and this has a detrimental effect on its water permeability. Using a leaf-blower or a rake is the best way to remove fallen leaves thus preventing leaf debris encouraging a layer of algae or moss to form on the pitch.

preventive maintenance of artificial turf saves a lot of work

3. Prevention is better …

Preventive maintenance can save a lot of work. To prevent sportspeople from bringing in too much dirt, it is advisable for them to wipe their feet before stepping onto the artificial grass pitch. This can be done using a mat, shoe brushes, dirt grids or a gravel tray with coarse gravel combined with a mat. A warning sign at the entrance to the artificial pitch is an effective reminder to players.

Professional maintenance of artificial turf

seams and lines are inspected carefully

Specialist maintenance extends the life of your synthetic grass pitch. On average, a visit twice a year from a professional maintenance team will make your pitch as good as new. The professional maintenance schedule should be decided with you in advance so that you know exactly what you can expect.

1.Inspection of the artificial turf

Specialists will systematically inspect the entire pitch and check all the seams and lines. If a seam is loose for any reason, it is repaired immediately.

the synthetic pitch is scrubbed for better permeability

2.Treatment of the pitch

The synthetic grass pitch is brushed and scrubbed simultaneously with a special maintenance machine. The brush ensures that dirt like twigs, leaves, paper, etc. are removed. The infill is then distributed correctly over the entire synthetic grass area.
The scrubbing of the machine is intended to de-compact the sand and/or rubber layer making it more comfortable to play on the pitch and prevents the formation of a hard "cake". This looser structure also discourages moss and the water permeability is improved.

The KB1000 maintenance machine decompacts the synthetic grass pitch

In cases of extreme contamination, the top of the infill layer may have to be replaced with a new layer of sand and/or rubber. Finally the water permeability is improved a little more using a KB 1000 maintenance machine that perforates the top layer of the pitch.

Water permeability is one of the major benefits of a synthetic grass pitch. Thanks to the construction and extra drainage, artificial turf certainly has an advantage over natural grass in this regard.

Succeed...

It’s good to have dreams and ambitions. But the road to their fulfilment can often be scattered with obstacles. With unlimited financial funds it is easy to create the dream facility. However, in most cases, it involves the search for the best, most cost-effective, long term solution.

At first sight, artificial turf does not seem more economical than natural grass, but it is. Cheaper maintenance has a lot to do with this, both the ‘daily’ maintenance and the professional.

Practical maintenance tips

  • Keeping the infill loose reduces the risk of injury
  • Regular brushing off the pitch ensures a more enjoyable game
  • Regular trimming of vegetation around the pitch ensures fewer leaves on the artificial turf
  • Regular professional maintenance extends the life of your synthetic grass pitch
