Can you play javelin or shot put on an artificial turf?

For the durability of the base, Desso does not recommended playing these sports on artificial grass. Possible solutions are to set up a special base for shot put.  A specially adapted spearhead can be used for javelin.

What sports are and are not possible on artificial turf?

In principle all sports that can be played on natural grass can also be played on artificial turf.  Sports that require separate demands on the field, like shot put or javelin, must be treated separately. However, there is almost always an artificial turf solution available.  For example, for shot put a special base can be installed. A specially adapted spearhead can be used for javelin.

Can artificial turf be used on slopes?

Yes. Artificial turf can be used on any sub-base as long as the surface is sufficiently even for the artificial turf rolls to be applied in the correct way.

Can artificial turf be used as a dog exercise area?

Can artificial turf be used in playgrounds?

Yes. Artificial turf is often used under swings, seesaws, climbing frames and slides to cushion any falls or to decorate the playground. 

Can artificial turf be used for decorative purposes?

Yes. ‘fake grass’ is often used in shop windows, trade shows, roof terraces, … and is safe for that use. 

Can an artificial grass pitch also be used for other applications than sport?

Your club, school or local authority activities like parties and similar are perfectly possible on your artificial grass pitch.  The artificial grass is tested extensively for intensive use and is consequently also resistant to the most extreme use.

Desso GrassMaster or reinforced natural grass is often laid in stadiums. When hosting  pop concerts and other mass events, the GrassMaster area can be covered without affecting the grass.

Can artificial turf also be used for indoor football and other indoor sports?

Yes. Artificial grass can also be used for indoor football. The infill, however, needs to be adapted to the requirements of indoor use. Cageball (a variant of street football) is also a typical indoor sport for which artificial turf is used.

Are temporary artificial turf areas possible?

Yes. A temporary indoor football event, a hockey demonstration in the market square, an extra sports field during sports week at school? Especially for these events, Desso has developed a mobile artificial grass system. This is made up of large pieces, like a jigsaw puzzle, comprising a shock absorbent base and artificial grass top. Just put the puzzle together and the field is ready for use. After the event, the Desso Mobile-system can be dismantled quickly and stored easily, ready for the next event.

Can a synthetic grass field be used for different sports at the same time? What about the line markings?

Yes. There are a number of set combinations like soccer/rugby/American football where all those sports can be played on 1 field.  The various markings are then integrated in a different colour. This is also possible with indoor sports halls that have approximately the same demands on a play area.  For schools and local authorities, multifunctional artificial grass pitches are often the best solution to enable the maximum number of sports to be played.    Sports like hockey require a special type of artificial turf and are consequently more difficult to combine with other sports.

Is artificial turf a good alternative to clay tennis courts?

Clay is still one of the most popular surfaces for tennis courts.  The feel of play on artificial turf tennis courts is very similar to this.  While the synthetic grass offers good grip for fast footwork, gliding to the ball is also no problem.  There are different artificial turf qualities available for tennis each with their own special features.  In addition you can play on an artificial turf tennis court throughout the year.  That is not the case on a clay court.

Can artificial turf discolour in the sun? Is it resistant to UV?

Everything in the open air experiences the impact of sunlight, and, more specifically, UV-radiation. For that reason Desso Sports equips its synthetic fibres with the Fibre Protection System (FPS), a technology that protects artificial turf from the fading effect of sunlight.  UV-stabilisers ensure that the negative rays do not permeate into the fibres.  All Desso products fulfil the highest standards in this field.

After how many years will an artificial pitch need replacement? - What is replaced?

The life expectancy of an artificial turf naturally depends on the maintenance and how often/intensively it is played on. 

As standard you can reckon on an average of 15 years.  After that period the play characteristics deteriorate. In these circumstances you do not have to replace the entire field. Usually only the turf requires renewal and the sub-base can be re-used. This has positive implications for facility budgets.

Don’t the synthetic grass fibres flatten after a time?

Synthetic grass fibres are partly supported by the infill.  In order to avoid synthetic fibres flattening, technology is incorporated into all Desso fibres that improves the pile restoration capacity, in other words the ability of the fibre to spring up again after being trodden on.  This technology ‘memorises’ the original shape of the fibre making the fibre spring up again.  Naturally, maintenance and regular brushing is also important to keep the fibres straight.

Can lines, patterns or logos be integrated into a Desso GrassMaster field?

To mark the lines, a special marking vehicle sprays water-soluble paint onto the Desso GrassMaster field. The paint is resistant to water after drying for one hour.  Because the natural grass grows and is mown, the lines disappear after being mown a couple of times.  Logos of the club and sponsors can also be painted.  These remain visible for longer and need not be changed according to the sport, unlike game lines.

How often do you have to mow a Desso GrassMaster pitch?

The frequency of mowing depends greatly on the conditions of grass growth (temperature and humidity) and the stadium architecture.  The maintenance of a Desso GrassMaster pitch is in fact comparable to that of a natural pitch. The difference is that the field is stronger and more stable thanks to the injected synthetic grass fibres. Thus some typical natural grass problems are resolved.

Can line markings, patterns or logos be integrated in the artificial turf?

Yes. The artificial turf is made to the customer’s specifications. Logos or other coloured elements can be integrated to give the field a unique, personal look.

How are synthetic grass fibres made?

Small pellets of synthetic material (polypropylene or polyethylene) are melted to a paste and then extruded under pressure through a mould.  The mould imitates the structure of a natural artificial blade of grass.

What is the difference between (extruded) mono-filament and fibrillated fibres? Which is the best?

Fibrillated or cut synthetic grass fibres comprise flat fibres that are split into narrow strips.  The cuts in the fibrillated yarn allow the fibre to split easily, but a consequence of this is that it wears faster.  Originally the fibrillation idea was an attempt to imitate the natural structure of grass, but experience has showed that the durability of the functional sporting characteristics is not optimal.  
Fibrillated fibres are used for hockey fields because these fibres have a strong influence on the characteristics of play (speed of ball rolling).  In sports other than hockey, fibrillated fibres have been losing ground to monofilament synthetic grass fibre.  Monofilament is a single whole (undivided) fibre and is closer to natural grass in structure and features than its fibrillating predecessor. Moreover these extruded monofilaments have a reinforcing effect en mass and are consequently much more durable.

Why are there different pile heights?

Pile is the term for the upright blades on artificial turf.  These can be cut at different heights (e.g. 40-50-60 mm). As standard, 20 mm of free pile height (the part of the synthetic grass fibre that extends above the infill) is calculated.
The pile height is usually dependent on the sub-base.  If you are building on stone, you will for example need a longer pile.  Each project is evaluated together with a specialist. 

Can Desso GrassMaster also be installed on smaller areas?

No. The computer-controlled machines which inject the artificial turf into the soil are designed to equip a sports fields with synthetic grass fibres as quickly and efficiently as possible.  As a result the machines are too large for use in gardens, drives, etc. 

What is Desso Grassmaster? What is it used for?

Desso GrassMaster is a unique patented system whereby over 20 million synthetic fibres are injected into a natural grass pitch.  As a result you achieve an ‘ordinary’ natural grass pitch reinforced with synthetic fibres.  The system is also known as ‘reinforced natural grass’ and is currently mainly used in stadiums.

What is the difference between artificial turf and natural turf?

What is the sub-base?

The sub-base of an artificial grass pitch is extremely important especially with regard to water permeability.  For good drainage the excavated area is filled with highly water- permeable material like stone, gravel or a mixture of mineral matter.  During heavy downpours the base is able to ‘store’ excess water and allow it to seep slowly through to the in-built draining pipes. A bonded base (asphalt) may also be chosen.

What is an e-layer?

An e-layer is an elastic layer of bonded rubber, which defines the technical sporting characteristics together with the other components of the artificial turf. An e-layer is not used as standard in every artificial turf and can also be replaced with a lava/rubber layer.  Desso Sports Systems will help you to make the right choice.

What is infill?

In order to make the artificial turf feel as natural as possible it is filled with sand and/or rubber granules.  These give the sportsperson the same feel and shock absorption as soil with natural turf.  The filler is developed so that it offers the best functional sporting characteristics for the sportsperson.  Moreover it keeps the fibres straight and in place. Naturally the sub-base also plays a role in relation to the technical sporting characteristics.

What is the backing?

The backing is the material to which the synthetic grass fibres are attached. It is almost invisible, but has important function.  Extreme heat, cold or humidity will always affect artificial turf. The task of the backing is to ensure that the artificial turf distorts, shrinks or expands as little as possible.  A good backing helps avoid creases or tensions in the artificial pitch.

What does an artificial grass pitch consist of?

An artificial grass pitch is a total system made up of different components.  All these components have a specific function and together create the play characteristics of the artificial turf.  The synthetic grass fibres and the infill (rubber and/or sand) determine what the field looks like. If black rubber is chosen for the infill then the pitch will look different to a field infilled with green rubber material.  What cannot be seen, but which is equally important, is the sub-base of the artificial grass pitch.  This comprises water permeable material that together with a drainage system ensures that no puddles collect on the pitch.  A mixture of lava and/or rubber of approximately 10 cm depth is applied over the foundation. Alternatively an e-layer or elastic layer made from bonded rubber can also be chosen. This ensures the necessary shock absorption and energy rebound.
