“The possibility to train and play on a base like this is a great opportunity for our students.”
Chief trainer of El Tigres, Edmundo Reyes
At the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, one of the oldest universities in Mexico, numerous teams are active in diverse sporting disciplines. The American Football-team, El Tigres de la UANL, is one of the best teams in the Mexican interuniversity competition. ‘Gaspar Mass’ can welcome 10,000 spectators at their arena.
During the renovations at the stadium a 9000 m² Desso Challenge Pro artificial turf was installed. Luis Javier del Valle, manager of the Mexican LJV Sport S.A. and responsible for laying the field, explains: "The artificial turf makes play possible 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It is environmentally-friendly, does not require sprinkling and is low maintenance."
Rector José Antonio González explains that the works on the stadium were a part of a coordinated project to develop the sports at the university: "We want to improve our sports facilities to position ourselves both nationally and internationally as a top university." That fits perfectly in their vision: "By 2012 we would like to be recognised as the most prestigious public Mexican university, both nationally and internationally." "Moreover", says the chief trainer of the Tigres, Edmundo Reyes, "thanks to the benefits of the new artificial turf the field can be played more frequently than was previously the case. "The possibility to train and play on a base like this is a great opportunity for our students."
