Did you know that … Helgoland, 70 km from the coast, is the only German island that is entirely in the North Sea? The small community is 1.7 km² in area and has 1,650 inhabitants.  Helgoland’s greatest natural treasure is the steep, red-coloured rocky coastline. The summers there are sunny, the plants exotic and the winters mild. It’s a unique environment that suits their Desso Challenge Pro² pitch perfectly.

Bustling sports life on a Desso field
Although the community has few inhabitants, the local sports centre is alive with activity. An artificial turf football pitch was installed around twenty years ago. It was blended into the landscape in the shadow of the red rocks. When the old field was ready for replacement, the community and the VFL Fosite sports association both got to work on the renovation. Young and old had the time of their lives removing the old grass surface. With a lot of hard work, and subsidies from the district of Pinneberg and Desso Sports Systems, the sports facility was renovated. 

The focus of the sports centre is the new Desso Challenge Pro2 pitch, infilled with sand and green rubber. It’s perfectly playable in summer and winter. It’s also resistant to the corroding effect of the sea air. It’s multifunctional, having lines for both football and handball. And it’s extremely well suited to years of intensive use by the school students and other members of the community.

Logo accentuates the pride
The community and the sports association are proud of their Desso Challenge Pro² pitch. So proud in fact that a very large (9m x 14m) Desso Sports Systems logo, made in artificial grass, has been cut into the sports field. It’s the first time in Europe that such a large logo has been integrated into a Desso pitch. It makes this project as unique as the surrounding landscape.
