Darren Baldwin and the team ‘Spur’red on for finale at ‘The Lane’

This Sunday afternoon will be the last time Tottenham Hotspur's Head of Playing Surfaces & Estates Darren Baldwin prepares the famous White Hart Lane GrassMaster pitch for a Premier League fixture. The visit of Manchester United to ‘The Lane’ will be the last to be held at the Spurs home prior to the stadium's planned demolition in late May. The work will allow for continued development of the clubs stunning new state-of-the-art multi-purpose stadium.

Darren Baldwin championed the club’s choice to select the GrassMaster system back in 2002 and its reinstallation in 2012. The industry-leading hybrid grass product has met the needs and requirements of the stadium throughout a 15 year association with the club, whilst an additional 6 GrassMaster pitches have been installed at their ground-breaking 77 acre Enfield training academy as a result of the stadium’s performance. All of the high specification GrassMaster pitches installed at Tottenham have been completed by Hewitt Sportsturf (Leicester), one of GrassMaster's approved contractors in the UK.

“GrassMaster is a great system that provides us with an excellent consistent playing surface with proven longevity.” Darren Baldwin states. “The additional reinforcement the system offers gives players a firm and stable natural surface which performs well game after game.”

Mr Baldwin has overseen hundreds of fixtures and events within his 21 years at the club including Premier League Seasons combined with European competition, England Senior and U21 fixtures. The condition of the pitch has always been immaculate due to the dedication and hard work of the stadium’s team.

The playing surface at ‘The Lane’ has consistently been voted one of the best in the Premier League. Darren Baldwin has been short-listed for the prestigious Premier League Groundsman of the Year award on several occasions, winning the accolade in 2007, whilst also collecting the coveted IOG Groundsman of the Year award in 2013. Additional recognition for the team has included collecting the IOG Professional Football Grounds Team of the Year award on three occasions (2010, 2012 and 2016).

Darren Baldwin: “We have been extremely happy with the surfaces we have managed since GrassMaster was installed – both at the stadium and the training ground. The quality of our pitches improve year after year thanks to the club’s continual investment in premium turf technology.”
