FIFA encourages use of football turf on Pacific Island of Guam as best alternative to natural grass

Natural grass pitches not fit for play due to heavy rains

As the island of Guam is often visited by tropical storms, it is difficult to grow and maintain perfect natural grass pitches at a reasonable cost. The existing natural grass pitches are often unfit for play due to heavy rain falls. “The previous pitch was wrought with drainage problems during heavy downpours common to Guam. It was also difficult to maintain and repair the pitch due to the high amount of usage by several adult and youth leagues, and coupled with year round national training sessions”, says Richard K. Lai, President of Guam Football Association.

The association aimed however to further professionalize and expand its infrastructure to make sure the increasing number of players could always play and train on a perfect pitch.

Desso synthetic football turf best alternative to natural grass

In order to further promote football in areas with challenging climatic conditions, FIFA has developed the FIFA Goal Project. The installation of artificial grass forms part of this project. FIFA supports the worldwide use of artificial turf for playing and training from both a quality and cost perspective. Artificial grass pitches have a constant playing quality regardless of weather conditions, unlimited capacity (up to 5 times more than standard natural grass) and need limited maintenance.

Advantages of artificial turf for the tropical Island of Guam

“The playing hours have increased substantially with the installation of the new pitch. The drainage has improved tremendously and was installed with regard to Guam’s history of typhoons. The edge of the artificial grass is buried beneath pavers to prevent typhoon winds from lifting the artificial turf. The pitch is built on coarse aggregate with drain pipes, guaranteeing no surface water, even during a 1 in 20 year storm”, Richard K. Lai explains.

Desso artificial pitches on Guam inaugurated by FIFA President Blatter

The football turf pitches, which are the third and fourth FIFA Goal Projects on Guam and the very first synthetic pitches on the island, were inaugurated by FIFA President Sepp Blatter. Besides artificial grass pitches, the FIFA Goal Project also invests in dressing rooms, floodlights and offices for the Guam Football Association.
